Susan Heard Photography's specialties range from simple and eye-catching headshots to customized personal branding images for businesses of all sizes. In this week's B.I.T.S., hear about Susan's passion for photography and the Chamber.

Can you describe what your business offers?
I specialize in business headshots - helping each client from wardrobe selection to backdrop & styling of the session.
I offer anywhere from a 10 minute - 'in and out' - to full 3 hour hair & makeup, with multiple wardrobe changes. My goal is to help you look your best - have fun- and have amazing images to help your business stand out and be noticed.

Can you talk about when/why you made the decision to start your own business?
I have loved photography since I was a child. The opportunity arose in 2016 for me to put all I had into
turning my hobby into a full time business. And I couldn't be happier!

What are your biggest challenges as a business owner?
One of the biggest challenges for me has been networking. As a former introvert, it has taken some time to learn how to get out there and help my business become visible. The Chamber has changed all that for me - I can now say I enjoy getting out, chatting with other business owners, and making new friends.

What are your biggest rewards as a business owner?
I absolutely love it when my clients receive their photos and come back and tell me that it's the best photo they've ever had of themselves. My goal is for all of my clients to become friends, where they feel so relaxed that they forget the camera is there. I can then capture their true personality - and bring out their absolute best.

How long have you been in business?
I have studied photography for decades, but became a full time business in 2016.

How does your business give back to the community?
I work with children and families who are facing life threatening illnesses. Portraits of our loved ones are so important, and capturing beautiful memories for these families at no charge to them is a gift - not only to them, but to me as well.

Why did you choose Germantown for your business?
I love Germantown. To me, it's the heart of the business community. The Germantown Chamber and it's members are so inviting & always willing to help each other.

How has being a Chamber member helped your business?
The Chamber has helped in many different aspects of my business. It has helped me grow - learning the "business side" of owning my own business. Most of us love what we do - our craft. But - the business side - sometimes we have to learn that as we go. The Chamber has been an invaluable tool in helping me navigate through those first few years.

Being a Chamber member has also connected me with some amazing people. I have made friends, made business connections, and have also gained many new clients through other Chamber members. I would definitely recommend becoming a Chamber member to anyone that is considering it. It is such a small investment - and you get so much in return.

Business In The Spotlight: Regel Pharmalab

Regel Pharmalab is a compounding pharmacy dedicated to the art and science of compounding. Can you describe what your business offers?
Compounding pharmacy services to the general public, medical professionals, including veterinary medication, in addition to offering vitamin and nutrient supplements, as well as bio-identical hormone replacement.

How long have you been in business?
Since 2003 (18 years).How does your business give back to the community? Support local high schools and local medical-related events with sponsorships.

Why did you choose Germantown for your business?
The heart of our business is serving the residents in the Germantown area which is why we relocated from Cordova in 2012.

How has being a Chamber member helped your business?
Provides more local engagement with other area small businesses like ourselves.

Our very own Chamber Ambassador, Robert Yates, has created an app for an entirely new way of networking and keeping up with your business contacts. In this week's B.I.T.S (Business In The Spotlight), he shares where he got the inspiration.

Follow App is the new, virtual Rolodex, except that Follow App takes it one step further, going everywhere your phone goes. Not only does it organize your contacts in ways that make access quick and simple (like industry, alphabetically, frequency of use, etc.) but it also makes reaching out and connecting to those contacts that much easier. The minute you enter a room, Follow App goes to work for you, circulating the room, connecting you to people you haven't even seen yet, and introducing YOU to the rest of the world!

Can you describe what your business offers?
Follow App gives back our users’ frequently missed opportunities to connect with their next referral partner or client while attending networking events. Follow App helps professionals find the right connection to grow their business while keeping them safe in such uncertain times.

Can you talk about when/why you made the decision to start your own business?
The idea sparked a year or so back, after attending a City Current breakfast with the Germantown Chamber. I left feeling as though I may have missed opportunities to network with the “right” person to grow my business.
I always get so much from our events but can’t help but wonder if I overlooked something. Throughout this year of development, we realized our app is needed now more than ever. With the need to be safe in conflict with the need to connect, we believe Follow App can bring peace of mind to “business as usual.”

How long have you been in business?
A little over a year in development, networking to build the right team, and quality product for the Chamber and their members.

How does your business give back to the community?
We will be giving back 10% to the Saving Lost Kids, an organization that is close to my heart.

Why did you choose Germantown for your business?
In my opinion, Germantown is the most welcoming Chamber in the Midsouth. I felt at home the moment I walked into my first luncheon. The Chamber is truly about helping others and helping you grow your business. Ironically, so is the Follow App.

What are your biggest challenges as a business owner?
The biggest challenge to date would be juggling work-life balance as a new business owner. It’s tough for me to find an off switch.

What are your biggest rewards as a business owner?
Seeing the idea take shape and our vision come to fruition is the ultimate reward. Follow App is serving its purpose by helping business professionals grow their business while staying safe.

How has being a Chamber member helped your business?
The Chamber has helped foster professional relationships to grow not only my business, but others as well through referrals.
